Changing the Game: Retrofitting for Resilience
The 2026-27 Society Theme, “Changing the Game: Retrofitting for Resilience,” challenges the building industry to improve the performance, efficiency, and resilience of existing buildings. ASHRAE President Sarah E. Maston emphasizes that many of the buildings expected to exist in 2050 are already standing today, making retrofits, commissioning, and operational improvements essential to achieving a sustainable future.
As the Florida West Coast Chapter, we are proud to support this vision by promoting technical excellence, professional development, and knowledge sharing that helps our members design, operate, and maintain high-performing buildings.
The Three Focus Areas
Understanding the Rules of the Game
Building codes play a critical role in improving energy efficiency, occupant health, and community resilience. ASHRAE is working to support code development, adoption, implementation, and education around the world through initiatives such as the Building Code Assessment Tool (BCAT).
Building the Right Game Plan
There is no one-size-fits-all approach to resilient buildings. ASHRAE promotes a team-based strategy that brings together owners, operators, architects, engineers, manufacturers, utilities, financiers, and code officials to assess current conditions, implement improvements, and continuously monitor building performance.
Building the Bench
To inspire the next generation of building professionals, ASHRAE is introducing innovative educational tools, including HVAC Hero, an interactive learning game that teaches building operations, energy efficiency, and sustainability concepts in a fun and engaging way.
